House Energy and Commerce Chairman John Dingell, now in his twentieth consecutive term, represents Michigan's Sixteenth District. He was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He attended Georgetown University and served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Dingell is an attorney and he lives in Dearborn, Michigan.

The House Energy and Commerce Commission has sweeping jurisdiction over energy, health, communications, consumer safety, much of the transportation industry, and numerous regulatory agencies. It studies air pollution standards, transportation deregulation, and oversight of the oil industry. Subcommittees include 'Transportation and Hazardous Materials,' 'Telecommunications and Finance,' and 'Health and Environment.'
